In life, as in leadership, regardless of how much you plan, you will experience success, and you will most certainly experience failure. When it comes to transcendent leadership, there is no greater test to your self-transcendence than failure. When it comes to failure, what sets transcendent leaders apart from other leaders is not just the ability to have a plan, but the system they have in place that allows them to master the skills necessary to account for the unexpected, while also seeking to care for the self-preservation of all.
Mike Tyson’s quote “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face” does not just represent the world of boxing; it also represents the world of leadership, and how the lack of a systematic approach reduces a leader’s ability to achieve their desired outcomes.
In Mike Tyson’s fight against Michael Spinks, he won in ninety-one seconds via a ruled knockout. This was unheard of at the time, as Spinks was an undefeated professional boxer and was considered the lineal champion. At the time, Tyson was also undefeated and held the championship belts of all three of the major sanctioning organizations. Going into the fight, neither Tyson nor Spinks contemplated defeat. Neither one was prepared for the success or failure that would follow. Their plan was to win. Neither had a system in place that would facilitate their next steps following the outcome, regardless of the result.
For a leader to avoid getting punched in the face, they must have a systematic approach in place to help drive overall environmental alignment within society’s social behaviors and to ensure their Hidden You analysis lines up with their goals. Without a proper leadership foundation and systematic approach, you might as well jump in the ring with someone who has the punching power of Mike Tyson.
Mike Tyson was right. Without a systematic approach to leadership transcendence, you too can experience the type of punch to the face that leads to a complete breakdown of your limbic system and your cerebral analysis—the type of failure that leaves you feeling completely left behind and wondering, What the hell just happened?
